Prem is Professor of Physiological Science, Head of the newly-established Institute of Clinical Sciences and Director of Education for the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at University of Birmingham.

After a first degree in Physiology at the University of Leeds, he completed a DPhil at Oxford in 1985 and his research interests have since remained in the field of chemoreception, with a particular emphasis on carotid body chemotransduction mechanisms and reflexes in health and disease.

Prem has held a Lister Institute Fellowship and has also served on a number of Journal Editorial Boards, including the Journal of Physiology, Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology and the Journal of Applied Physiology.

He has had a long association with the Physiological Society and has previously enjoyed service as its Meetings Secretary. Presently he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Physiological Society and Chair of the Society's Publications Committee.

He is also a member of the International Committee of the American Physiological Society.

Prem remains an enthusiastic teacher and holds key positions in the delivery and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate medical training at Birmingham as well as performing duties as an External Examiner at other UK and International Universities.
